Strategy is a feeling

Could there be a more confusing word than ‘strategy’?

In my March 2021 talk at the very first Fundraising Everywhere Strategy conference, I share my personal journey of looking for a decent definition for ‘strategy’.

I talk about my first job in fundraising, at WaterAid, where I buried my analytical brain in the comforting certainty of annual budgets and performance spreadsheets, feeling that strategy was somewhere in the numbers.

But one day, I realised I was missing something important that was right under my nose. It was something that started a long process of unlearning, and bought me right back round to where I started: to a more human, heart-led place.

Have a watch. I’d love to know if it resonates.
